As one of the most commonly used computational mechanics methods, finite elements subdivide the computational domain into smaller subdomains, called finite elements, which are implemented by meshing, and the extended finite element (XFEM) method, which allows the study of boundary layer behavior and linearization of biofilm growth in elliptic equations.
