Application of Biofilms in Blood Purification

Introductions

Introduction

Hemodialysis (HD) is a widely used and proven treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The therapy requires patients to visit a dialysis center 3-4 times per week, which imposes a significant social and psychological burden on patients. The main disadvantages of this therapy are: the ineffectiveness of removing the more toxic medium-sized molecules and protein-bound uremic solutes; the process is discontinuous, making the water balance, uremic waste (potassium and phosphate) fluctuates considerably. In recent years, several studies have confirmed the link between poor outcomes in dialysis patients and the poor removal of protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUT) by conventional dialysis.

Application of Biofilms in Blood Purification

  • It has been found that dialysis and adsorption can be combined on a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) to effectively remove toxins from human plasma.
  • The initial mixed matrix membranes (MMM) were too large and their mass transfer characteristics needed to be improved before clinical application. The new generation of mixed matrix membranes (MMM), with their smaller size and optimized mass transfer characteristics, have a higher rate of protein-bound uremic toxin removal compared to commercial dialysis membranes.
  • The removal rate of protein-bound uremic toxins is higher than that of commercial dialysis membranes.
  • Another effective solution for the complete removal of protein-bound uremic toxins is the use of artificial kidney devices containing functional biofilms as carriers of proximal tubular epithelial cells.

Our Solutions About Biofilm in Blood Purification

Our Solutions About Biofilm in Blood Purification

The formation of biofilms in dialysis systems may be relevant because they constantly release bacterial compounds and are resistant to disinfection. Biofilms produce bacterial debris that can cross the dialysis membrane and stimulate an inflammatory response in the patient. This inflammation is associated with dialysis-related mortality and morbidity. Bacteria in the form of biofilm can cause problems in the fluid pathways of hemodialysis equipment, and testing for biofilm in dialysis water is necessary to improve patient safety and quality of care. CD Biosciences now offers a variety of dialysis water biofilm testing services to meet your research needs.
