In the last few years, there has been a culmination of DEM-based numerical biofilm models addressing different problems of biofilms. Among the numerous biofilm models, most of the proposed DEM biofilm models can couple physical and biological processes, some of which cannot include biological metabolism, to quantify biofilm interactions with the external environment. One of the main motivations for biofilm research is the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) by bacterial communities as an externally engineered matrix to adhere and protect cells from drugs and environmental changes. Several proposed DEM models can successfully simulate EPS and can be used as a potential tool to study EPS mechanisms using biofilms as ELM.   • The most widely used biofilm modeling approach for our construction of biofilms is the discrete element method (DEM), where biofilm modeling they are mostly referred to as individual-based modeling (IbM) or agent-based modeling (AbM).
  • During DEM modeling, a single bacterial cell is usually identified as a single element, while replication and interactions are based on different biomathematical models. It is particularly suitable for biofilm modeling because it successfully couples and accurately describes hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, biological processes, etc., and can serve as a bridge between individual and population level behavior.
  • Most of the proposed DEM biofilm models in DEM construction can couple physical and biological processes, some of which cannot include biological metabolism, to quantify biofilm interactions with the external environment.
