Biofilm Microelectrode Analysis

CD BioSciences provides one-stop biofilm microelectrode analysis service. We offer a variety of methods and equipment to choose from to meet your research needs.

  • The microelectrodes provided by CD BioSciences can characterize the gradient distribution of the characteristic parameters of the biofilm along the depth (perpendicular to the surface of the biofilm), as well as the change of the characteristic parameters at a certain depth inside the membrane, and can also measure the thickness of the biofilm.
  • We analyze the test results of the microelectrode, which can provide two types of parameters: the rate of mass transport at the membrane/water interface and the rate of biochemical reactions inside the membrane. These two types of parameters are important parameters for deriving biofilm models, and are also important indicators for examining biofilm degradation ability.

Other Biofilm Analysis Approaches We Offer

Biofilms have anisotropic and complex structures, and it is difficult to use microelectrode technology alone for complete characterization. We generally combine other newer biofilm analysis techniques, including but not limited to:

  • Microsectioning technology
Microsectioning technology is to use a cryomicrotome to cut biofilms of different thicknesses into slices of several microns, and it is approximately considered that the biofilms in the slices are homogenous. Microsectioning technology must be used in conjunction with other methods to analyze thin sections, such as microelectrode technology, FISH technology, biofilm phospholipid analysis technology, dye adsorption method, and traditional analysis methods.
  • Molecular biology technology
Molecular biology techniques include FISH technology, DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis), etc. We use molecular biology techniques to study the structure and dynamic changes of microbial communities.
  • Confocal laser microscopy technology
We use laser confocal microscopy technology, which can perform optical tomography on biological samples, perform 3D reconstruction, and achieve dynamic 3D imaging of biofilms.

Comparison of the above Four Technologies

Among the four commonly used techniques, microelectrode technology and laser confocal microscopy technology have the least damage to biofilms and can achieve online detection, but the shortcomings of the latter are also obvious, mainly that the studied biofilms cannot be too thick, usually less than 200 μm , which is nearly an order of magnitude different from the mature biofilm thickness (0.5 mm to 2.0 mm). In comparison, microelectrode technology has fewer limitations.
