Quorum sensing (QS) is an intercellular communication system that controls gene expression in a cell density-dependent manner. QS regulates expression of multiple phenotypes, including virulence, motility, luminescence, and biofilm formation. QS signaling molecules, which mediate the ability of bacteria to sense surrounding cell density, have the following special characteristics:

• Production occurs at specific growth stages or in response to certain environmental challenges;
• Accumulate in the surrounding environment and are recognized by bacterial receptors;
• Accumulation of threshold QS signal concentrations leading to a physiological response.

Cause phenotypic changes. Even in bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella that do not produce AHLs (Gram-negative QS signaling molecules), it still has AHL response regulator proteins that enable it to respond to AHLs produced by other bacteria.
